STAFFORD LOAN RATES INCREASING

Stafford loan interest rates will increase next month

Interest rates for Stafford loans will increase on July 1. For outstanding loans that have not yet been consolidated, the variable interest rate will increase from 4.7 percent to 6.54 percent while enrolled in school, and from 5.3 percent to 7.14 percent during repayment.

After July 1, new loans will have a fixed interest rate of 6.8 percent. Borrowers will not be able to consolidate their new or outstanding Stafford loans while enrolled in school or during grace periods.

Ellwood Loan Deferment Options (effective July 1, 2006):

1. An interest rate reductions from 9% to 5% annually;
2. Up to 5 years deferment for each of the following:

a. Active duty in the uniformed services
b. Peace Corps volunteer
c. Advanced professioal training including internships and residencies

Apply for Federal Student Aid

In order to apply for federal student aid, a student must complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) form.

Loans by Web

Students should be aware that the Office of Student Financial Services now utilizes TG's Loans By Web. This represents a change in the method previously used to apply for student loans.

New Web Financial Aid Services

Students may now check on the status of their financial aid application, the status of their financial aid award, and the status of financial aid disbursements by utilizing UT-LINK.
